Tarbiyyah is an Arabic word that linguistically means: increase, nurture, rear, growth, or loftiness. Tarbiyyah means the development and the training of people in various aspects.
In this regard, the word tarbiyyah refers to the systematic development and the training of individuals including children, adults and the others. The tarbiyyah process, including spiritual, intellectual, moral, social, and physical aspects, aims to put Muslim on the path of constant self-development. Also, it is to instill in them the passion for truth, justice, courage, bravery, loyalty, generosity, self sacrifice, lofty ideal, pity, fortitude, capacity to excel in righteousness and in everything good.
Allah (SWT) has assigned duties and obligations to man and woman. However, the Spiritual and Moral Training of Children rests squarely on the shoulders of their mothers.
This is only possible if we follow the steps of the Holy Prophet Muhammed(saw) because Almighty Allah testify to it in the Holy Quran: “Wa innaka lakala khuluqin aseem”
Meaning: “And thou dost surely possess high moral excellencies” Q68v5.
and another verses which says:
“Laqodkaanalakum firosuulillahi uswatun hasanatulli man kaana
Yarjullaha walyaomal-akhiro wadhakarollaha kathiiran”
Meaning: “Verily you have in the Prophet of Allah an excellent model, for him who
fears Allah and the last Day and who remembers Allah much”. Q33v22.
The verses above show that those who follow the Holy Prophet are one of the people that have the best of the character.
Tarbiyya (moral training) of Children should start at an early age. It was said by our Husoor(atba)that “environment affects the minds of Children and plays a big role in building their character”. This shows that some environment may cause harm to the character of children.
On the other hand the crime committed by children mostly start from home, so the Tarbiyya of children should start from home.
Just as we seek the best medical treatment to avoid illness and improve our physical health and wellbeing likewise our children can also suffer from spiritual illness such as riya (showing off), takabbur (pride and arrogance), hasad (envy), lack of shakr (ingratitude), habb al-jah (love of fame), hub al-mal (love of wealth) karahiyat al-qadr (displeasures with the divine decree) and the like.
The proper upbringing and education (tarbiyyah) of our children is therefore of utmost importance which is natural responsibility which the All-wise, All knowing creator (Allah) has imposed on whoever has been blessed with a child or children on one hand, and the entire community/society on the other hand. The upbringing and education i.e. (tarbiyyah) of our children should be in terms of their Sutuk (conduct) adab (etiquette) and akhlaq (good character). In a nutshell, tarbiyyah is a process of developing our children to become more conscious of their deeds because it aims to put us (as parents) as well as them (children) on a path of continual self analysis, self correction and self-development as they develop.
This tendency to copy and be influenced by his environment that man learns a language from one’s parents, learns other deeds and good things which make a child a well-mannered person. If the parents are virtuous, observe the salat, recite the Holy Qur’an, live with each other in an atmosphere of love and affection, and abhor falsehood, then the children under their influence will adopt virtues.
On contrary, if the child sees lying, fighting and disputes, making fun of others in the home, not giving due regard to the dignity of the Jama’at or other such bad action; then because of that tendency to copy or because of the impact of the environment the child learns these evils when he goes out, he tries to learn whatever he sees in his surroundings and among friends. This is why I draw attention of parents that they should keep an eye on the outside environment of their children. And even within the home they should keep an eye on the programs that they watch on television or their internet usage.

What are world crisis?
Cyber Fraud: Example of these are “Yahoo boys” and “wirewire operators”. Those boys steal huge amount of money from the bank account of their victims. This crime may lead the victims to committing suicide or may make the life of the victim miserable.
Engagement in Rituals: We heard from news that three boys from age 19 to 22 in one town killed one of their girlfriends. They confessed that they wanted to use her body parts for money ritual. There is another boy of 15 years who confessed to selling each child he captured for N5000 each to a ritualist. We also heard that some Yahoo boys also killed girls for ritual to enhance their wealth. Many crimes are being committed by young children of nowadays.
Immorality: Female Children Engaging in Obscenity and Nudity
Recently, the internet was filled with the news of some female children of between the age of 15 and 17 years who travel abroad for a competition but ended up engaging in fornication and even recording the act. Another lady was reported to have had sex with a dog for a reward of N1.7 million. Children of nowadays dress half naked. Some reveal their breasts and tummy whereas Allah has said in the Holy Quran that the whole body of female should be covered Q33 v 60.
Gambling: This is an act of drawing lots to achieve success which Islam totally condemns. It is a deceitful and ungodly act.
Interest: God Almighty has forbidden taking interest in about five places in the Holy Quran because God knows that its result leads to oppression of some people by another. This affects the poor people more. Q2 vs 276, 277, 279 and 280.
Injustice: Injustice is an act that is against humanity and an act of oppressing the poor and the oppressor will have an agonized punishment from Allah.. Quran said:
“ The blame is only on those who wrong men and transgress in the earth
without justification. Such will have a grievous punishment Q42 v 43”.
Giving short measure: God Almighty has forbidden short measure in the Holy Quran:
Suratul Tatfif: “Woe unto those who give short measure, those who when they take by
measure from other people, take it full, but when they give by measure to
others, they give them less” Q83 vs 2-4.
All these acts cause harm to fellow being and the crime started from homes.
Antidotes
GOOD PARENT (especially mothers)
“ Yaaayyualladhina aamanu quu anfusakum wa ahlikumnnaro wa quduannasu
walhijaro alaea malaaikattun ghilasun shidaadun llayahsuunallah amaaarohum
Wayafhaluna maayumarun “.
Meaning; “ O yee who believe: save yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel
is man and stones, over which are appointed angels, stern and strong who
disobey not Allah in what He commands them and do as they are commanded” Q 66 v7
Mothers have been given the physiological requirement to bear children and the function of raising them.
As mothers, we have a harder responsibility to discharge moral obligations on our family especially children. We have to be role models in taking care of our children. A child’s first school is the mother’s lap as the Holy Prophet has said “Paradise lies at the feet of mothers”. Holy Prophet (saw) has also let women know that if they discharge their duties properly on their family (husband & children) i.e. (raising children and taking care of homes), it is equivalent to Jihad and Hajj (service of Islam which man performed). He said:
“O woman, understand and tell those women who you are representing that a
woman who takes care of her husband’s household in the best manner during
-3-
his absence and raises his children with good morals will earn the same reward
as men who perform other good deeds and Jihads”.
Hence, raising children to become righteous Ahmadi Muslims allows a mother to earn the pleasures of Allah for herself as well as for her children.
Mothers must know the technique of training children and the kind of training to give them and how to apply the training.
